This unique approach to wearing an ostomy pouch required the surgical implant of a plastic covered, magnetized, samarium-cobalt ring under the abdominal skin around the base of the stoma. A magnetized plastic cap with a soft foam plug was inserted into the colostomy. The plug was held in place by the magnetized force of the ring, and the cap prevented the spontaneous elimination of feces until the magnetized cap was removed. This approach did have complications such as peristomal skin erosion due to the foreign magnetic object under the skin and discomfort. |
