Before surgery for ostomy construction, the abdomen is assessed by a Nurse Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence. Principles for stoma site location identify abdominal features such as abdominal quadrant, abdominal symmetry, skin folds and indentations, scars, boney prominences, visibility of potential stoma location by the person and any restrictions or devices the person may use, which would affect self-managed stoma care. Once the location(s) is determined it is marked indicating to the surgical team the preferred stoma location. |
