Loop ostomy rods were developed and used to stabilize the bowel during the post-operative healing process. Originally made from glass and red rubber tubing (A), their size was cumbersome, which made post-operative pouching a challenge if not impossible. As surgical procedures and post-operative pouching systems developed, glass rods and rubber tubing were replaced by smaller and lighter plastic rods of various designs. This enables effective post-operative pouching eliminating risk to the healing bowel and peristomal skin. |
