Various Drainable-End Closures and Spigot Designs

Time Period: 1930s - Present

Manufacturer: Various

The design of fecal closures and urinary spigots have progressed through the years from metal clamps, elastic ties, twist ties, caps, flip valves and more. Today, the selection of an end closure is integral to the pouching system. The closure must be a durable and reliable mechanism enabling frequent emptying of the pouch. Many of the fecal pouch closures  (pictured left) have adapted a nylon inter-locking or VelcroTM -like mechanism for ease of use. Urinary closures have flip closings (pictured right) with a waterdrop icon to indicate when the drainable valve is opened or closed. All closures, however, must consider the person’s preference in management, manual dexterity, visual acuity and effective ease in care.
